By now, most of you have heard about the new star ingredient of natural health products... CBD! But what the hell is CBD? How in the world is something so good for me only just now coming onto the market? Let us clear up some of the fog around what CBD is and explain to you why it's considered by most of our athletes and friends as one of the best discoveries of their older age.
First things first, CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoïd molecules produced uniquely by the hemp and cannabis plant families.
History goes back all the way to 1895, when researchers Wood, Sivey and Easterfield were able to isolate and identify the very first plant-derived cannabinoid, cannabinol (CBN). 45 years later, a group led by R. Adams were able to identify Cannabidiol (CBD) for the first time.
The considerable quantities of new medical discoveries coming out every month on CBD and it’s various benefits can certainly be explained by the recent decriminalisation of hemp cultivation across the USA and some other countries around the world, such as Canada. This also gave the researchers and government institutions more opportunities to explore the properties of CBD and study the interaction of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the human body and Cannabinoid receptors.
Almost daily, new research uncovers more on the interaction between the two. This area of research has not only been fascinating, but the scientific community have established that the ECS system, when working properly; helps regulate processes like sleep, appetite, digestion, mood, motor control, immune function, reproduction and fertility, pleasure and reward, memory, temperature regulation, and pain. In other words: Cannabinoids are able to elicit their natural balancing effects by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which may promote healing and homeostasis in the body.
To add to this body of research on the endocannabinoid system; recent studies have shown that our brains have specific receptors designed to accept cannabinoids, known as CB1 and CB2, which are responsible for the assimilation of cannabinoids molecules in your system.
Doesn’t that sound good!? Even though CBD research is a tad complicated and is still yet to be accepted by mainstream models of health and wellness, it's exciting to explore the potential benefits. So what does CBD look like and how do I consume CBD?
There are many type of extractions to produce raw cbd materials from the plant and the purest form is called CBD isolate. CBD isolate consists of a white powder that can be mixed between a variety of health products such has topicals, creams, balms or edibles. People also smoke CBD flowers or vape liquids to fasten the onset time of the CBD effects.
It truly feels like the potential of CBD helping the population has overcome the public opinion of fear created by it’s sister plant, Cannabis. As opposed to other cannabinoids like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), when extracted and consumed, CBD doesn’t have a strong effect on cognitive brain activity and this why it’s commonly known to be not psychoactive.
If you're interested in trying CBD, we suggest you give a small dosage a go at first, working up in time. We also recommend getting your CBD from reputable brands like CBDayz, who 3rd party lab test all their products. What is 3rd party lab testing? It's when an external company ensure there's no pesticides, the THC level is legal and the quality is very good.
End of the day, we're excited about this space and whilst everyone is different and you should take your own medical and professional advice before trying something new; our athletes and our own team use CBD in their own recoveries and health routines.
